At To Be an MD, we believe mentorship is more than a professional stepping stone—it is the foundation of community. Each mentor–mentee bond should be unique, shaped by clear boundaries yet open to genuine connection. Everyone needs something different, and the relationship is ultimately reciprocal. As one of my mentors once said, "Mentors can learn just as much from mentees through a genuine connection and open communication.’" The experience is what you make of it, but our hope is that it leads to meaningful, lifelong bonds.requirements include academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and personal qualities.
Mentorship begins with open and respectful communication. Mentors and mentees are encouraged to agree on preferred methods of contact, reasonable response times, and meeting expectations, while remaining mindful of each other’s schedules and commitments.
Mentorship relationships are grounded in professionalism and purpose. Conversations should remain focused on academic development, career guidance, and personal growth, with clear boundaries that protect mutual respect and integrity.
Trust is foundational. Experiences and challenges shared within mentorship are treated with care and confidentiality, creating a safe space for honest dialogue and growth.
Mentorship through To Be an M.D. is a partnership. Mentors provide guidance, perspective, and encouragement — not guarantees. Mentees are expected to take initiative, reflect thoughtfully, and follow through on guidance provided.
Both mentors and mentees bring value to the relationship. We emphasize mutual respect, gratitude, and recognition of effort, understanding that mentorship is strengthened through reciprocity.
Effective mentorship supports learning on both sides. Feedback is constructive and respectful, growth is continuous, and progress — big or small — is acknowledged and celebrated together.
